Anyone here recommend Groupon?

So I just signed up for Groupon.com after my sister recommended it. What they do is get group discounts by ordering in bulk. So they have a special deal like a Ferrari driving experience in Boston (my sister got this one as a gift for Father’s Day) for $89 and you decide if you want to buy. Typically they get hundreds of buyers so the merchants offer nice discounts.

Anyway, I was thinking it might be good for travelers. Say you’re planning a trip to New York City. You might want to sign up for Groupon to see if any good restaurant deals show up – they often have things like $20 for $40 worth of food. They also seem to have discount massage and spa services – another nice vacation item.

I was thinking it might be a nice addition but apparently one traveler is having quite an experience living off of Groupons. If he makes it for a year living off of Groupons he gets $100,000. I like traveling and I would like 100 grand but I still don’t think I would sign up for what this guy did. I just can’t imagine traveling without spending money. Not seeing friends and family is tough too. I’d like to see a map of his travels but I didn’t find one. Apparently, though, he has been all over America.

I’ve used Groupon quite a bit in the Tampa area and have been pleased with my experiences so far. I’ve gotten half-price (or better) deals on fun things to do with my kids like bowling and kayaking, lots of food and drink deals, and even personal services like massages and facials. Most of the places I’ve tried I’ve gone back to later for full-price visits.

I can definitely recommend Groupon. It is a great site and there are some wonderful deals. HOWEVER, one word of caution if you are going to use this to book deals at a place you will be vacationing. You may not want to use this site to buy experiences or activities that could be cancelled due to the weather. Once you buy and the deal has been confirmed, you can’t return it. So, for example, I recently purchased 7 discount passes for riverboat cruises on the Missippi River to use while on a visit to St. Louis. Unfortunately, shortly before the trip to St. Louis there was a LOT of rain, and the river flooded. Thus, the river was closed to river traffic the entire time we were there and we were unable to use our passes.

But, other than that one complaint, I have had nothing but good experiences using the Groupon site and have purchased many coupons as gifts.

    Happy travels.

I think using Groupon for vacations is a great idea! I’ve only used it locally so far, but have had good luck. We recently bought discount passes for a Segway tour of Boston to do with visiting friends or relatives. That would be a good buy in a city we were going to visit too. Plus lots of the food deals are good for months if not a year.
