Travel agencies
Here's an interesting article about how travel agents are having trouble staying profitable. While the travel industry is still recovering from 9/11, many travelers are now shopping for travel online. One travel agent had this to say:
If all a traveler is doing is booking a $199 plane ticket to Orlando, then it probably makes sense to do it online, McCabe said. Where the company makes a difference is in more complicated business trips or vacations, and when something goes wrong.Personally, I check things out online and then call a travel agent to see if they can find somehting better. Many times they can, but not always. Posted by James Trotta at November 2, 2004 11:05 PM
There's a lot to say about online bookings, including ease, and speed. Last week I over heard, at StarBucks, about a great deal someone made in Venice and when he got there with his new wife the manager said the order was kicked out because of a "bad number", even though the web site thanked him for the order. The manager said he couldn't get the great price but he could pay the full price, which he did pay.
I would have to say travel agents do a lot of work; they have to be up on the travel trends, stability of insurance companies, tour suppliers and airlines companies. And that's just to get you there. Once you get there and something goes wrong they are there to go to bat for you, and once you get home and there is still a problem they know who can correct the problem.
As Americans we get the fewest days off and you think we would want the best of our vacation. Yes, flying home for Thanksgiving is a simple in and out, but going out of the country is a little different. I like to know someone knows about transfers, and up to the minute options if something back fires.

Posted by: James Trotta at November 6, 2004 8:16 PMI have some travel ideas I like to share with many of you, but I don't quite know where I can discuss them so as to receive as many responses as posible. Firstly, I like to set up a customized package deal allowing people to take full advantage of it. Secondly, It will take place in a small town of the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean in the north western part of the country. Thirdly, this package deal will differentiate itself from other packages in that: 1 would permit prospets the opportunity to benefit from desired products/services, rarely or never found in traditional, conventional tourists destinations' packages, with a wider realm of choices, 2 would permit them to experience the culture and its tradition through local interaction under complete security confidance, and 3 would be provided for an unbeatable, below market value cost. If you find this idea or like to comment or possible even email me directly, please do so; I'd love to hear every and anything you like to say...

thanks a lot!

dont know if this the rite place for this buttt....I just returned from a 2 week trip out west..We did most of our booking on line and got burned....1st we found that a midsize car rental fron Budget at the Denver airport was $850.00 for 2 weeks as opposed to $350.00 for 2 weeks at Budget 15 miles away.It cost us $45.00 taxi fare or $6.00 bus fare to get to car.Same car, same company just NOT AT AIRPORT...2nd issue was that we booked on choicehotel.com which is a good legitamite site, buttt we somehow were re-directed to choice.com which is almost a fraud site..We were double booked, were charged $35.00 to cancel or change room and was told that full price would be charged if we did not cancel reservations that we made on 6-23 by 6-03 we would be charged full price..One room that we had for 2 nites we cancelled 1 nite but they cancelled both nites so we had no place to stay except for luckily their sister hotel down the street had a vacant room that was less pleasing but the same price. And the grand fanilly.....One of the options from this choice.com site was do u want us to " bill me later"..That turned out to be a credit card type service called " Bill Me Later" out of Atlanta Ga. that charges 17.99% after a 30 day grace plus on a $218.00 charge ,they rounded it off to $260.00 and dont give you any info on the bill except the confirmation # so if you have lost that, you are lost..This is for the double booking where they used a variation of my name to double book. Now I have to deal with the motel [easy] ,choice.com [dont know yet] and " BILL ME LATER " [dont know yet]...Seems that most properties were upset that I booked on line..They said that they had to offer on line companies a discount + pay a booking fee to them and they have that nasty cancellation, change policy...Seems the new deal is going to be look your room up on line and get the best rate quote then call the property or go onto their web site and ask for their best rate and if its more, they should match the on line quote...According to most properties that I stayed with, they have a web site or are developing one because they are tired of all the abuse they and their customers receive from these so called on line best deal web sites such as travelocite,choice.com,cheap travel etc. etc.
