Not allowed to travel

Mukhtar Mai, a Pakistani woman, who was gang raped in 2002 allegedly to punish her brother for a crime. After receiving an invitation to visit America from Amnesty International, she has been banned from traveling by the Pakistani government. The opposition claims that this is to try to prevent further tarnishing of Pakistan's image. Of course, if there is no legitimate reason for the travel ban, the government's image will suffer even more than it already has.

What part of "America" was she invited to visit? Canada? Mexico? El Salvadore? Brazil? or maybe it is the United States (of America)?

I think the pakistans are very brutal and they have already given themselves a bad reputation. let her into our country to be free for GOD's sakes.!! america was built for all aliens to come to to be free !!

I feel that she should be allowed to travel & live a normal life, she is the victum & yet she is the one being punished. she was attacked by 12 men & they only got 90 days? that is just horrible, I hope she makes it to america & stays here, she deserves to be happy & live without fear after all shes been through.

Hey, Dudes and Dudettes
NEWSFLASH! we are not responsible for the whole world just ourselves. If her government is a bunch of @$$ holes that is too bad; however it is not our responsibility!

i cannot believe how ignorant some of you people can be. she was abused and her government does not want to help and yet you dont care. how would you feel if you were in her shoes. your ignorant views on other countries and people are why most of the world hate America

Posted by: fatimeh at June 14, 2005 4:32 PM

is there goverment taking any americans that are abused in this country? WE ARE NOT THE WORLD ORPHANAGE#######

Those of us who were born in the USA are privileged simply due to the accident of where we were born, not because of some earned right or inherent superiority. That being said, we do not have to take in anyone, but I think we have a moral responsibility to help people where and when we can. Unfortunately, we are a country filled with many people who disagree with this statement and whose narrow minds and closed hearts prevent them from caring about people who are born elsewhere, speak a different language or maybe just have a different color skin.

We all have the opportunity to make the world a better place. We can't fix it, but we can make it better. Part of that is trying to help people. Not because of what they can do for us, but just because of the fact that they need help.

Now, to get back to this story, we are only getting one side. I wonder what the travel restrictions for women are in general. Or has she done something that has revoked her right to travel? I am not assigning blame here, and I feel bad for what she has gone through, but I'd like to hear the otehr side to the whole thing. These may be independent issues. If so, then being a victim of a violent crime does not give her special access to rights she didn't have before. This type of investigation is like being a good salesperson. You have to be able to see the barriers and overcome them to get the sale, or in this case to find the relevant information. It may be as clear as it appears to be, but it may not be that clear. We don't know.

Interesting note that the men posting feel (as I do) that we are NOT the Golden Arches of freedom for the world. America is NOT here to take on every person that has been abused in the world. If we were to take more land then we might have the room, but since that's not going to ever happen, (because we just die to free countries that will oppose us in the future) we definitely should not take on any more people! Immigration legal and illegal needs to be shut down. Our population is already growing to a point where we will have to build on land that should be left alone. It's always too late by the time people realize what is happening. Can anyone say Global Warming?

What's all this talk about not letting her in? People are allowed to visit America. I don'
t think Amnesty International is inviting her to come live here although I imgaine she could if she wrote an autobiography...

Anyway, my understanding was that she was supposed to visit America to give a speech or something (And to whoever asked which part of America, I have no idea). The fact that the Pakistani government won't let her travel is suspicious and if it's because they want to protect their reputation, they might try punishing the real criminal (the important tribal chief who allegedly gave the orders), not banning a crime victim from traveling.

NOTE TO FATIMEH.........

True, I agree and feel their are jerks the worldwide. However it isn't our role to proform "social engineering" for the less progressive nations. Think about it, I assume you too would "hate America" were we to invade or threaten that government, right ? These morons who practice these backward customs, aren't American, anymore than the "Honor Killings" committed in the U.K. !!! It is your culture, not mine......I didn't move to Pakistan, but I see from your e-mail address that you moved here. Please get down from your soapbox and return to your homeland to effect change, and stop preaching to us here ! I invite your feedback.......... ,Mark

Mark,
I suspect that you are among the 84% of the US population who don't have a passport. You need to travel, dude! A bit of foreign travel is what the doctor prescribes for you to get rid of your provincial narrow-mindedness.
The mind is like a parachute...it only works when it's open.

I'm amazed at the some of the comments I'm reading here, but all are welcome. Anyway, the US has intervened and Pakistan has lifted the travel ban. I just don't understand how anyone could not be outraged that the ban was imposed at all. How could you not be outraged that she was put under house arrest after being r*ped (allegedly to protect Pakistan's image)?

Posted by: James Trotta at June 16, 2005 9:45 PM

Wow. The woman was gang r*ped as a form of revenge against her brother. It saddens me that someone actually posted "who cares?".
