Travel to Mexico
The latest hurricane has destroyed resorts in Cancun and Cozumel, so people who had been planning to travel to Mexico need to make new plans. Mexico is still an option: "There is much more to Mexico than Cancun and Cozumel; those just happen to be the easiest to access from this part of the country,” said Linda Jenkins, manager of leisure travel for Conference and Travel.
Acapulco, the Mexican Riviera, Mexican Baja. I've never been to any of these places, but I imagine they can be at least as good as a trip to Cancun. I don't think a visit to Cancun is one of those unique travel experiences people like to talk about. I've been to Cancun but I don't think I've ever bother writing about it until now. It's a great place to party, but I'm sure it's not the only place...

I have reservations at the Gran Melia in Cancun for after Christmas this year. I can cancel prior to Nov. 18th but lose my $800 deposit. Should I cancel and look elsewhere or try to go and hope for the best?
Posted by: Drew Schenck at October 28, 2005 4:48 AMEven Acapulco is a bit touristy...a little south is a place called Las Bahias de Huatulco (the bays of huatulco) An extremely beautiful place with several small beaches. Nicely accomodates tourists, however it is not too touristy. I think it is more of a Mexican's vacation spot than an American's. Then there is a little city right there as well..it's been a while. Well worth checking out!!
Posted by: Emily at October 28, 2005 5:14 AMCabo San Lucas at the tip of the Baja peninsula is my choice for a Mexian destination. Nice, rather small, and good times are to be had there. From Jan to March the whales can be spotted there in the warm waters, and marlin fishing is popular there. Plus lots of nice golf courses. Like the song that Sammy Hagar sings in VH. "There's a sleepy town, south of the border. go there once, you'll be there twice"
Posted by: FiveO at October 28, 2005 5:47 AMMazatlan,Mexico is the place to be. Located in the state of Sinaoloa, Mazatlan stands as one of the Pacific coasts true jewels . Stay in Old Mazatlan (the most beautiful area in my opinion, cathedral, market, ect.) at the hotel La Siesta for a cheap room with a oceanside balcony ( oh and the room is nice)
Posted by: Ben at October 28, 2005 8:04 AMcancun is a beautiful place, but is not the only place that you could visit, OAXACA has a lort of places,Huatulco , close to Mazatlan is a small state the name is Colima and has a beautifu beechesn Nayarit too, small town just for the people that wants to enjoy a good time
Posted by: bulmaro at October 28, 2005 1:12 PMI have reservations in Cancun for the 1st week of May. Not that this hurricane hit i'm just not sure about going. My wife and I were going to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. If we don't go there can anybody suggest a nice romantic and cosy place to spend some time with my loved one?
Posted by: Gilbert at October 28, 2005 1:41 PMMexico is an extraordinary place to visit. There are unlimited options!!!
IT ALL DEPENDS WHAT YOU ENJOY DOING...
I recomend IXTAPA,ZIHUATANEJO this is 2 hrs from Acapulco and is way better in my opinion, stay at the LAS BRISAS CAMINO REAL and you can't go wrong, but if you're on the younger side and want to party stay on the hotel blvd. at the Krystal or even the Club Med.
Thank you for the comments everyone. I too have heard good things about Ixtapa and Mazatlan. I've never heard of Bahias de Huatulco (the bays of huatulco) but an authentic Mexican vacation spot sure seems like it's worth a little research...
Posted by: James Trotta at October 28, 2005 4:54 PMI live on the west coast of Mexico, just north of Ixtapa. I am from New Zealand and my wife is from Texas. Any place on the west coast of Mexico is a fantastic place to visit. My favourite is Zihuatanejo. It is right next to the resort Ixtapa but much more mexican in flavour - also a lot cheaper to eat. There is just not a bad spot on the Mexican west coast. Cancun is overrated.

dreams resort???? How was it
I've been to Playa del Carmen twice in the past three years, and have gone during the summer low (hot) season both times. Each time, we had a totally different (but both were very positive) experience. I absolutely love it there - really unique blend of European and Mexican culture without the craziness and megahotels of Cancun. It's a great destination, and I'm anxious to go back again. Unfortunately, I do fear it'll turn into another Cancun, someday. We'll see.
Posted by: carpoolio at November 1, 2005 3:14 AMLooking for different travel ideas to Mexico? Try Baja, California. Only 20 minutes from from San Diego Baja is still unspoiled, beautiful and lost in time. For those who want to party all night Rosarito, Ensenada, San Filipe or Cabos will suit. For those who want rural, rustic, real relaxation try La Bufadora. This is a sleepy hollow with only a handful of houses to rent or offer B&B. You'll have to book months in advance if you want to stay on the ranch either in B&B or house rental, but the wait is worth it. Here you have a beautiful bay view, fishing, kayaking, diving, horse-riding or just walking. There are only a couple of restaurants serving Mexican meals, a market on Cruise Ship arrival days and the rest of the time you can relax, read a few books, explore the ranch and marvel at the diversity of houses all built by their owners and and as individual as they are. Don't come here if you want to party all night please - here, at night you can see a whole galaxy of stars, hear the waves rolling gently against the rocks and take time to appreciate back to basic wonders.
Find more information on a web page (www.labufadoravacations.net)that will give you the email address to write to for more information - be warned though - you will either love it or hate it...we love it! If anyone out there has stayed there, let us know what you thought!!!
My wife and I and another couple are flying to Puerto Vallarta. I am the only one of the four that has traveled internationally, ane that was always in the military.
We are researching both travel insurance and the attractions in the PV area. Our highest concern at this time is the insurance, since my wife and I have never purchased any before. Any help and/or comments would be appreciated.
Posted by: Steve at April 26, 2006 12:29 AMHi Steve, Not sure if you've already made the trip to PV or not! As far as travel insurance, are you speaking of automobile insurance or general travel insurance? I've traveled many times to and within Mexico and have never purchased travel insurance. Many credit cards cover such things as lost baggage and personal items, even a few homeowners' policies do as well. Of course, driving is a different story. Automobile insurance is a definite necessity, Sanborns and others can help you with that. Or,if renting a vehicle, rental companies in Mexico offer CDW, another requirement should purchase...Passports are a plus, easier to get through customs, etc., although birth certificates and even voters' registration are accepted. But, I'm sure you already know all of that. Anyway, Mexico is great, lots to see and lots to do, along the coast or inland. Some fabulous resorts, small villages, and interesting attractions. Have a good trip if you're on your way!
Posted by: Sharon at May 14, 2006 5:58 AMWe live in Chicago and own a rental apartment in a suburb of Puerto Vallarta. We are now retired and are looking for a professional driver to drive our car there for us within the next several weeks and we would fly down. Do any driving services still exist? Does anyone know what the cost would be? (We had been going to PV every year since about 1987 and in 2000 it dawned on us that we should just make a commitment and buy something rather than throwing a lot of money away by renting hotel rooms or houses.)
Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to offer.
