Mexico recovering from the hurricane

Mexico is recovering from the hurricane. Riviera Maya, which didn't get hit full-force by the hurricane, has about 97% of its hotel rooms ready for tourists. I have some tips on Riviera Maya and Play del Carmen from a few weeks ago if you're interested. There's also a little conversation about retiring in Riviera Maya (specifically in the jungle nearby).

That reminds me of an even older post about Cancun. Remember when I asked if the travel agent was to blame for sending British tourists to Cancun during hurricane season? That post received quite a few responses. According to the article I linked to above, "More than 18,000 of Cancun's 27,800 rooms are open now and another 3,450 are scheduled to come on line by the end of June." Cozumel is said to be fully recovered.

I wasn't a big fan of Cancun (and haven't been to Cozumel or Riviera Maya), but I am happy to see Mexico getting things back in order and hope that life is returning to normal for Mexicans affected by the hurricane.

A friend just returned from Royal Hideaway--loved the Hotel but thought the food was fair. She commented that the town is so much fun, that she wished the Hotel wasn't all-inclusive. If anyone knows of an option near town that upscale, I'd appreciate knowing about it.

Having recently returned from my vacation in Cancun, I cannot believe the negative comment about this paradise! We have stayed at the Omni as well as the Royal Resorts in the past and absolutely loved each place. Hurricane damage was extensive in the area, but the Omni was up and running 100%. No moldy smells or any signs of a problem except for the new palm trees and foliage. We love to take the busses into town and the restaurants there are not only beautiful, but serve excellent food. We have never been sick. Cancun with it's sun, beautiful ocean, wonderful beaches, friendly people- is indeed paradise!

After just returning[5-14] from the Dominican Republic for a weeks stay in one of the Riu complexes,I can safely say that Cancun is a paradise compared to Punta Cana,Santa Domingo etc etc..The people of the Dominican Republic have nothing to offer us.I guess Cancun is the american play ground and is visited by a good percent of americans where Dominican Republic has more of a mix of nations. The weather in the DR is better than Cancun, cooler, breezier but everything else is sub par.Our hotel was rated 3 star by USA and 4 star by them.Things were so screwed up from the flight down on United etc etc that I am calling the CC company and contesting the whole $5000.00 bill also the FAA and the owners of the hotel complex are being called..There is plenty of blame to go around. I will let them sort it out..ooops got to stop..getting all riled up again!!!!
