Reasons to visit Maine for vacation
If you plan on entering the travel writing contest for a chance to win 1,000 dollars in cash prizes, you have less than two weeks to email entries to jtrotta@gmail.com. Other comments about my blog here are also welcome.
One place you might consider writing about is Maine. Maine is a good choice for 2006 because the state is trying to boost a tourist industry that has been flat for the past 5 years.
The result is FreeStayMaine, a program that will give out free vouchers for accommodations on return trips to Maine. Vouchers are being given out this summer and fall. Cruise ship passengers will receive vouchers that can be redeemed for a free night of lodging at participating hotels and bed & breakfasts.
I'm sure there are lots of things to do in Maine but the thing I know best is that there are a bunch of outlets in Freeport Maine. I went once but am not much of a shopper. A couple of years ago, my wife, sister, and mother went and had a great time staying in Captain Brigg's House Bed & Breakfast and shopping all day. They recommend that bed & breakfast by the way. The current owners are selling but hopefully the new owners will keep up the great work.

Posted by: Deb. at May 4, 2006 6:25 AMI proposed to my wife on Otter Cliffs in Acadia National Park on a beautiful fall day. The scenery there is simply spectacular. Acadia has miles and miles of old carriage roads that are blast to bike on. Bar Harbor lies just outside of the park and has a quite a few things to do, such as kayaking, and hiking and has quite a few great restaurants. We also make it a point to visit Ogunquit a couple of times a years. The beach is something to see and the Marginal Way has to be one of the finest shore walks on the East coast. There's a very cool pastry/coffee shop on Main St that serves the absolute best coffee I've ever tasted. Definitely worth a visit.
Posted by: Rich at May 4, 2006 8:09 AMMy husband and I are from Maine. We moved out to Illinois in 2000 and ask ourselves what were we thinking every now and then. Maine is an awesome place to vacation as you have part of the Appalachian Mountains, the ocean and the Desert of Maine. Where else can you go and see so much of God's wonder? The people are friendly, the scenery is beautiful and the lobster is to die for. Make sure you get one if you go out there as the flavor beats anything else you can buy anywhere else and the price is better too. AYUH!
Posted by: Bonny at May 4, 2006 10:08 AMMount Desert Island is my favorite place to visit. I love to go in the Fall, when the crowds are lighter.Sitting on the rocks in Acadia, is where I commune best with the man upstairs. Acadia is my church. It nourishes my heart, mind and soul. I find it to truly be "God's Country." Did I mention the lobsters? THEY nourish the tummy!

We had a family reunion in Maine a couple of years ago. We stayed in Old Orchard Beach, which has some tacky touristy stuff, but is quieter in the off-season (we went in October, fall colors were gorgeous, of course). Prices were reasonable, food was great, we were right across from the beach; Portland is really charming. We took a boat trip around the harbor, very relaxing. And do I really need to echo everyone else's endorsement of the beauty of Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor? Incredible.
And oh, yeah, we shopped. I'm hooked on the L.L. Bean shoes I got there--most comfortable ones I've ever owned.
Posted by: Elizabeth at May 4, 2006 2:47 PMI was Born and raised in a small town in Maine. My father is a lobster fisherman, my mother is the town clerk, my stepfather a boat builder. Growing up I couldn't have been more happy in the woods or up a tree watching a summer storm moving in.
Since marrying a Navy man, I have lived in a few other parts of the country from Virginia Beach to San Diego, and have seen most of the country. But, there's no place like Maine. The beauty, tranquillity and the life attitude there. Everywhere else is so rushed. Maine, You work hard and play hard. the week is for work, weekends for family fun by the lake or on a snowmobile.
There's no place I'd rather raise my kids. When my husband retires in 3 years, guess where we are gonna be? In Maine. A place where I know my kids are safe, where they can walk out the front door and have acres of land to run on and explore.
Maine, the way life should be!
Sounds amazing! I'll go back, just not for the shopping!
Posted by: James Trotta at May 5, 2006 3:10 AMI am just recalling the wonderful time that my parents and my brother and I had in Maine. We had just spent a year in Europe and it was great to be back in the States again. I remember it was October. Everyones house looked so cozy nestled among the beautiful red and gold autumn leaves with the wisps of smoke curling around in the air from the fireplaces. The people were very friendly and the lobster and clams were very accommodating also! I look forward to going back there soon with my husband and a good appetite as well!
