Anything you'd like to know re: Japan? I'll try
to help...especially relative to the southernmost
island, Kyushu. My wife of 13 years is a native of this wonderful place, to which we make a joyful annual pilgrimage, usually checking-out
Osaka, Kyoto or other Honshu (main) island cities
along the way...Although true that Japan can be mighty costly, there are hundreds of ways to do
it on the cheap for those willing to do the req. homework and to be crafty, adventurous and a little unconventional. Bargains, beauty, amazing
and kind people/culture, rich history, opptys.for
physical & spiritual healing, great food, etc. all abound in this magical land...Also, the very
finest and most elegant in whatever you please, if one's inclined to shell-out the bucks! The prices for accomodations, food and some of the best service and transportation in the world are especially cheap on Kyushu, but can be found easily on the northernmost island, Hokaido as well...and as I said, an entire sub-culture of
foreigners live and visit in the big island for so little that the locals are truly amazed when one reveals his/her "gai-jin" game secrets. We know less about tropical Okinawa, but I do have
a cousin married to a US serviceman and residing
thereon for a couple of years now who surely can
answer Q's about that gem destination. A great resource for visiting in Japan is the travel blog "Metafilter", esp. for the main island of Honshu...The latter is pretty limited re: Kyushu or any of the other islands, however. I'm a realist at 50 years old, and as much as there is to love about America, I wouldn't ever dream of retiring here...Maybe an ex-patriot in a little norte americano pueblo in one of those banana republics, but a move to Japan in under 10 years is our goal... Even without any sort of college degree, one can teach English privately to throngs of folks of all ages hungering for almost any little slice of our good ol' Americana! Do yourself a huge favor and spend some serious time in Japan!
