Why I hate Spirit Airlines and will never fly them again after going to Punta Cana

Not long ago I blogged about visiting Costa Rica to review some hotels in Manuel Antonio National Park.

I went to Kayak and did a search there. They showed me American Airlines as the cheapest option. I was surprised to see Spirit Airlines was more expensive than American until I noticed that they were searching only Orbitz, not the actual Spiritair.com website.

I went to the website, found Spirit Air a little cheaper than American, and made my reservations to San Jose. So I thought.

I got my itinerary in my email a few minutes later and it said I was going to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. I immediately went to their website and found that changing my reservations would cost $60/person. This seemed pretty ridiculous considering the reservations were only a minute old...

So I tried calling SpiritAir to inform them about the error but I never get through on the phone. After two recordings telling me to visit the website instead of calling, I get to the touchtone menu. After going through the motions they always hang up on me due to "unusually high call volume" and no available representatives.

Well I tried calling several times over a few hours and their recording always told me to try back later.

I replied to the email that had my reservations from Spirit Airlines explaining the problem and my inability to get through on the phone. No response.

So that's why I hate Spirit Airlines even though I've never flown with them. The non-existent customer service and the $60/person charge for changing reservations that are less than a minute old really make me angry. I will never fly Spirit Airlines again - they have officially become my least favorite airline.

However, going to Punta Cana will be fun (I'm too cheap to spend $120 to change the reservations back to San Jose) and my time is too precious to continue calling Spirit Air (it seems pretty obvious Spirit Airlines will never answer the phone).

So where should I stay in Punta Cana? Are there any resorts you would like to see reviewed here?

Sometimes errors turn out better than the solutions....and remember when given lemons, to make lemonade.

The Dominican Republic is loaded with history, including Columbus's New World landing sight.
And being a small island there should be plenty of spots to kayak around?

And depending on time, why not take a short flight to Costa Rica if you want???

THE BEACHES IN PUNTA CANA ARE BEAUTIFUL. THERE ARE ALSO CASINOS IF YOU ARE INTO THAT. TALK TO THE LOCALS AND ENJOY THE OCEAN.

I went to Punta Cana last year for my honeymoon, it could have been a real disaster. Do not go parasailing unless you want to be left off on the beach a few miles at least from where you started and then told to swim to shore because they had to take a siesta. I also hope you know spanish because the hotel people made no efforts to speak english. The food is also bad. We had talked to many people on our trip they had bad experiences with the food, language barrier and excursions. Take lots of gas ex and immodium, you'll need it!

Yikes Michelle! Where did you stay? I'll make sure not to go there because of the food.

I don't speak Spanish well, but I studied it in high school and had to use it with a nurse who didn't speak English once (I was in Korea before I learned any Korean). So anyway, I'm ready for some linguistic adventure but not bad food!

Thanks for your support boycotting SpiritAir Kristin. I know I'll never use them again.

Check out the 'all-inclusive' Punta Cana Sunscape.
There was a blog earlier mentioning what a great place, accomodations, water sports, food and service.

I would not be so fast to condemn an entire island because of one individual's dislikes including lack of tolerance for peoples speaking in their native tongue.

I just returned from Punta Cana and had a great time. We stayed at the Punta Cana Princess, a 3 hotel complex. It is an all-suite property, all inc. Take the VIP service, it cost us 80.00 each for the week and included massages, motorized watersports, premium alcohol, and much more. The staff was friendly and helpful. They kept the property spotless, many restaurants to choose from, they even raked the beach each morning. Have fun Joe A. Cape Cod, Ma

We stayed at the Bavaro Princess. It is an all inclusive resort. It was fantastic

I love flying with spirit, they are my favorite. I just flew with them in April to Punta Cana. We stayed at a great resort. Go read my blog on them and see what you think anita-traveldreams.blogspot.com

I think if you go there you will be delightfully surprised. Sorry about your mix up though. Sometimes that is why I go through a travel agent. They can usually fix those problems before you are charged any money. Good luck on your trip. Anita

I visited Punta Cana last March and had a great time. The beaches are beautiful! Dont feel too down about Having to go there instead of your original destination. I will have to agree w. comments about horrible food/immodium as well as other tourists as well as hotel staff knowing ZERO English! We stayed at the Bavaro Beach Resort which was good i guess...(connected to 4 other Bavaro chain resorts)...that U also have access to their restaurants/pools/facilites...which was nice. Try to go with All inclusive---its the best way to go for sure. Good Luck and Enjoy! MY #1 recoomendation though---take your own snacks and medicines!! They are very costly there. EX: $10 for a can of Pringles. $8 for ONE Immodium. Not kidding.

I forgot to add to the above comment that I use the internet to book many of my trips and b/c of your troubles, I WILL NEVER use Spirit for anything. It sucks for your inconveniences youve experienced w/them but maybe you are saving many other people the hassles at the same time!! So thank you. I will spread the word to my fellow travelers.

I went to Punta Cana last summer and stayed at the Iberostar Bavaro all inclusive resort. It was one of the best hotels I've been to. Everthing is included, meals, drinks, entertainment, tips, etc. Definately 5 stars!!!

I went to Punta Cana two years ago. I stayed at Punta Cana Occidental Resort. It was wonderful. The previous comments about the language barrier are correct however you must realize you are in another country and you learn to communicate the best way. Hopefully with all the mistakes that Spirit has made....you make it to Punta Cana!!

I just happened upon this blog while searching for something not even remotely related, but wanted to weigh in. I've flown Spirit twice and they've been two of the worst flight experiences in my life (I travel for work or pleasure about once a week, so that's say a lot.) After the first SNAFU, I had it out for them and spent hours making my complaints known. Turns out, if you talk to a reservations agent eventually, they'll tell you there isn't a customer service team- Your only official resolution is to write in to a corporate address. I did one better than that and mailed in a complaint letter, along with emailing it to every executive whose name was listed on their website. I got a call the next day and free flight vouchers for my entire party of 4. After screwing up that flight as well, I called it quits and swore off them.

I hope your actual flight experiences are better than mine! I've been to DR and really enjoyed my time there. I don't remember the hotel name, but the beaches were great, the weather was warm, and the locals were friendly. Have fun, in spite of Spirit!

I have been to Punta Cana twice and swear that I will move there one day.
My husband and I stayed at Secrets Excellence in Punta Cana. Road trip from the airport to resort is an adventure all in it's own right! I loved the views so the two foot deep pots holes weren't so bad.
The staff tries very hard to bridge the language barrier. The food was top notch. Not once did we "feel" the need for Imodium.
I do know that Secrets the company has under gone many changes over the past year. The actual resort that we stayed at I beleive to have been rented by Secrets and the owners decided that once the contract was up they wanted to try their own hand at running a resort. You may want to try a travel agent on information for this resort. Secrets web site shows new resorts opening in 2008 but they maybe still running at the other location until the Grand Opening for the new resorts.
Above all else enjoy your trip!!!

My husband and I stayed @ the Iberostar resort in Punta Cana & had a fabulous time. The staff could not have been nicer - they were so accomodating. Food was excellent. There was a lot to do @ the resort and a good amount of excursions as well. As far as the comment about the "language barrier" - when you're in a foreign country, assume that no one speaks your language and try to communicate in the native tongue. A tiny language dictionary will do the trick.

I joined your Hate Club on my recent trip to St. Thomas Virgin Islands in Mid July. Traveling with my family of 10 we were departing back to the US only to find that our flight was possibly going to be canceled due to mechanical issues. With 3 sick children, I was irate to find out that if the mechanical issues were not resolved with aircraft the first available flight to accomodate my family would be 5 days later. They would not interline or refund my money. I was held hostage by unprofessional local employees with no manager or no way of talking with a supervisor at the Spirit Airlines ticket counter or toll free number. Wow I learned two valuable lessons. Never fly spirit again. Never fly an airline that won't reciprocate with other airlines in a remote location if the flights are few and far in between. Needless to say, plane finally arrived 7 hours late and we got out of Dodge.

stop crying because YOU chose the wrong airport...most travelers complain that airline travel is so complicated...i've been in the airline industry for years and that is a stupid mistake a lot of travelers make because you didn't pay attention to what you were doing...

This may cheer all you up. Google "Spirit Airlines"... Geeks Unite!
