Brick & mortar travel agencies vs. online travel agencies

This article says that travel shoppers are starting to return to regular travel agents. They are turning away from the online travel businesses because of poor customer service.

I understand. If I had booked my trip to Costa Rica through a travel agent, I would have ended up in Costa Rica. Instead, I'll end up in Punta Cana this summer. I also would have saved myself many hours of work but I probably would have spent more money. I'm not even sure about that though.

On the other hand, the one time I did use a travel agent was when I went to Cancun. Everything was OK but we expected the travel agent to pick out something better for us. I think that if I had done the research myself I would have ended up in a better resort. One of these days I'll figure out the name but it's probably too late for a review anyway since this was in 2001.

This article on travel insurance for British travelers, says to buy travel insurance online (directly from the company), not through a travel agent. Apparently travel agencies overcharge for travel insurance (about 1.3 billion pounds worth). That includes normal agents and online ones.

I would like to take the time to address BOTH issues. First, as a travel agent, I find it quite interesting that people blame an agent when they don't get the service they prefer. Much like picking a doctor or lawyer, you should always shop around till you find the fit you are looking for. Some are looking for CHEAPEST - others for value, or service. I always go over the clients' expectations before making any suggestions, and as an FIT specialist, my clients never leave the office without a detailed itinerary, with shopping, dining and cultural issues fully addressed. Secondly, they never leave the office without TRAVEL INSURANCE. And that may mean an annual medical policy, as well as trip-specific coverage. Pricing for this is ALWAYS the same whether they book through the agency, or the insurer direct. The prices you see listed are always the same either way. I do think that if you want the best trip, though, you do have to take some responsibility yourself. Make sure you have been crystal clear as to your likes and dislikes, what activities you prefer, what your budget expectations are, and where you have travelled before, and let the agent know what you did and did NOT like about those places. The more info you give your agent, the better your options will be tailored to your likes and dislikes. And remember...if all you're looking for is CHEAPEST - you are likely to get exactly what you pay for.

Linda I really enjoyed reading your comment. I am not a travel agent but enjoy researching different destinations. I also travel quite a bit. You do get what you pay for. Folks have to do some research and decide what they want to get out of the trip when they return. As for travel insurance, it is great to know that you have some security especially when you are paying lots of money for a vacation. I would like to know the web address of your travel agency.

The travel agent is not the only one responsible if you didn't like the resort you were at. As an agent I always give my clients a detailed list of all the recommended properties and if available a web addres where they can take a virtual tour of the property before deciding. When you book with an agent you can always get things set right. I know because before I was an agent I went on a 25th anniversary trip to Hawaii. The hotel we were staying at was doing a major remodeling project. One phone call to our agent and we had our hearts desire, a new hotel and an extra day on Maui to make up for the inconvenience. That's what an agent does and that's why it pays to use them. That's is one of the major reasons I became an agent. To help people have a great travel experience. You will never get that from on online agency. You get what you pay for.
