Some of everything: visas for crime victims, Sandals losing divers, social networking

I have a good mix of articles for you today.

Illegal immigrants in America are being offered a limited number of visas if they were the victims of a crime and help law enforcement with the investigation. It seems that many illegal aliens were afraid to report these crimes to the police because they feared deportation. In true government fashion, the law was passed 7 years ago but the visas are just now being made available. Well, 30 days from now.

The same article has a scary story about a border patrol guard facing murder charges for allegedly executing an illegal immigrant who had surrendered while trying to cross the border.

Here's a story about British families getting a free Sandals vacation. Of course, on their first Sandals vacation (Sandals Grande Antigua Resort & Spa), the Sandals dive team left without them - leaving them in the ocean somewhere.

Luckily the two British men were vacationing with their wives. And luckily their wives were waiting for them to return - when the women noticed their husbands weren't on the boat they called for help. I guess the men were rescued with no real trouble.

I do have a couple of previous blogs on Sandals including one on Selling Sandals vacations and this honeymoon advice blog entry where Sandals was recommended.

This article mentions a few social networking sites for travelers. I'm on Facebook if anyone wants another Facebook friend... I might sign up for Myspace one of these days. As for the travel social networking sites, I'm not sure. I don't think I know anyone who uses them. Does anyone use any of these?

Asmallworld.net - international user base, and users try to meet up when on the go.
FlierTalk.com - frequent fliers.
World66.com - users share travel advice, creating a kind of wiki.
Dopplr.com - business travelers share travel schedules.

My comment is that you should not be here illegally. If these people were here "legally", then they could go to the police. Sorry but I have no sympathy for them and think the visa idea is a bad idea.

Did you know that 48,000 Americans have been killed in America since 9/11 by ILLEGAL aliens? Think about it...

@ travelfan:

And how many Americans have been killed by other Americans since then? Spouting off statistics without citation does not make your point stronger. Yes, people should exhaust every avenue they have available to them to enter the U.S. legally, but by attempting to scare people into parroting your anti-illegal immigrant rhetoric with the mention of September 11th, you're just making yourself look ridiculous.

adventuress, you are an idiot. what's wrong with anti illegal alien rhetoric?dont you care about the murders, rapes thefts and the myriad of other crimes committed by illegal aliens, the denegration of our medical facilities and educational system .There is nothing positive about illegal aliens. all is negative.

Posted by: jock311 at September 8, 2007 4:49 PM

Anti-illegal alien rhetoric is fine if it's your cup of tea. As someone who works in immigration law and sees the actual process, I can safely say that it's not mine. I just don't like any kind of rhetoric when it's supported by unsubstantiated statistics. Attempting to blame illegal aliens for every woe that exists in this country is counterproductive and a reaction born out of xenophobia. Sure, there is a big problem in this country with illegal immigration, but like I've already said, what about crimes committed by born-and-bred U.S. citizens? Last I checked, hospitals and schools didn't suck because of illegal aliens there. They suck because they're run poorly and lack funding.

If wanting a little bit more fact instead of knee-jerk fear makes me an idiot, then give me a dunce cap and put me in the corner.

Adventuress,

You are doing what you claim travelfan and jock311 are doing and that is putting words in their mouths or using a broad brush. These two are pointing out a couple of problems associated with illegals, not blaming them for all of the U.S.'s ills. If the illegals were not here those crimes would not be committed. We, the tax payers pay for their medical bills and education of their children. We are forced to pay to have documents printed in Spanish because they do not want to try to learn our language. It always makes me laugh when people similar to you say that illegals pay taxes too and thus should receive these services. How many illegals do you know that have a Social Security card? Their employers do not pay with a check and deduct all the necessary taxes. They are paid under the table in cash. Another excuse to allow illegals is they do not take jobs away from citizens or legal aliens. Other than the mentally ill, I doubt there are very many homeless who would turn down a job held by an illegal.

I don't like my tax money paying for people to enter the country illegally any more than other Americans. So the medical expenses and other costs do bother me.

But, if every criminal knows that illegal aliens are fair game because they can't go to the police we could (well we do actually) have a real problem.

In the end, I have no problem with this new law but I do have some problems with other immigration laws.

Posted by: James Trotta at September 9, 2007 12:10 PM

I'll repeat my comment. If these people were not here ILLEGALLY (and criminals themselves), they would not need to protection of this new law. They would be in their own countries and not ours and could report any crimes against them they wanted to.

The should wait in line like others have to. Sneaking across our borders is not the way to enter the U.S.

Does anyone remember the long line of American citizens that waited to apply for the meatpacking jobs that were open after an immigration raid on the plant? I'm sick of the line about them "taking jobs that Americans won't do."

I noticed that James Trotta didn't post my last comment but felt compelled to add his own in "support of" illegals.

Bush is wasting a lot of money on the war.
If Bush had any sence about him he would put our hard earned tax $'s on making Mexico a part of the USA. That would elimate immigrant problems with Mexico, complaints of immigrants taking over USA jobs, immigrants getting USA driver license, not reporting crime in fear of being deported, living here illegally, Boarder Wall, criminal activity in smuggling immigrant's and criminal activity in smuggling drugs. Sure we have got the next countries boarders to worry about and some of you out there are thinking, yeh right, are we going to make South America part of USA too? Mexico has a boader too but a lot smaller than Mexican boader with USA. NO, we are not taking over South America, just Mexico which seems to become our big headache.
And if we make Mexico part of America, has anyone ever thought that just maybe they would want to stay home because they would be under the USA law and would be able to live like they dream to live. Grant you Mexico would not become part of America with out a fight but at least we would be in a war for a good cause for everyone involved and we would win!!!

SO WAKE UP BUSH AND GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF THE CLOUDS AND RICH MAN'S TERRITORY!

Texas resident:
Actually we are winning the war in Iraq that you distain so much. I guess it's okay with you if A.Q. comes in with other illegals and enters the U.S. illegally too?

Luis,
You are a criminal. You broke our U.S. laws. You should go home and help to clean up the corruption in your home country.

TravelFan: I've seen the statistic you quoted (48,000 murders since 9/11 by ILLEGAL aliens) several times but have yet to locate the original source. Can you tell me where you saw it please? If true, I believe this number is important since it is about 6x the current lethal casualty rate in Irag and about 5x the general murder rate in NYC and about 50% of the entire murder rate in the US. Please post your source or send it to me privately ... captnkrunch@gmail.com Thanks.

Luis,
If you sneak into America against our laws, you are breaking hte law...hence a criminal, a law breaker!

You might be an exception if you served this country to EARN your citizenship. I'm okay with that because you are risking your life for this country and should go to the front of the line as far as I'm concerned.

However, if you sneaked in, lied about your social security number to work, are free loading all our services and sending your money back to your home country, you can go back and stay.

And quit bring the racist crap into it. I'm talking about people ILLEGALLLY in this country no matter the color of their skin.

Just California alone:

The report also estimated that the state will spend another $1.4 billion to jail the 48,000 illegal immigrants in state prisons. California is compensated by the federal government to offset the cost of housing this population, but the federal payments were a fraction, about $111 million, of the total cost, Martin said.

To figure out the contributions that this immigrant population makes in taxes, the federation's study said it adjusted the Urban Institute's study estimates of $732 million for population increases and concluded that they contribute about $1.7 billion in sales, income and property taxes.

A similar study conducted by the Center for Immigration Studies in Washington, D.C., and released in August, said that illegal immigrants cost the federal government $10 billion more than they pay in taxes.

The federal government pays about $2.2 billion in medical treatment for uninsured immigrants, according to the report. It pays $1.9 billion in food assistance programs, such as food stamps and school lunches, for low-income families. And it pays $1.4 billion in aid to schools that educate illegal immigrant children.

Martin said states bear most of the cost of illegal immigration.

"State costs are much higher on a per capita basis because of the fact that the largest expenses are medical care and education and those are borne at the local level, not the federal," Martin said.

since 9/11, 48,000 Americans have been murdered ( 25 a day- 12 vehicular homicides and 13 violent murders, plus 8 children are molested a day.. these numbers come from a report by Congressman Steve King , IA) all while calling other groups are callig Americans racist, even though their main advocate is La Raza (which translates the race), whose motto is "For the Race everything, for everyone else nothing" and who openly support/aid and abet illegals.
