the Philippines
This article on the Philippines is not very specific but they do mention that it offers great variety and is affordable. They also mention the crazy airports - I know Cebu airport was not very relaxing...
Anyway, if you're looking for some more specific ideas on the Philippines try Pagudpod, Hills of Chocolate, or Cebu.

it is true that the philippines offers a great deal of variety and affordable . yet it offers a lot more than what you think is just another country. for this country is a compilation of every beautiful thing if you're looking in the right places.
as mentioned are the those above but please take note that it is not hills of chocolate but chocolate hills located at the province of Bohol. it is found in Cebu. and if you want to experience a fantastic day at the beach, Boracay is the place to go to. if you like hot springs, you can go to Camiguin or Cagayan de Oro. there are many beautiful places from north to south, east to west. you can hop from an island to another in the hundred islands of Pangasinan. there is too much too expect about this country if you learn to forego its developing state. you'll enjoy it! have fun!
Posted by: icys at October 26, 2007 2:40 PMChoclate hills is difficult to get to due to bad roads, but since there is nothing else to see it is worth the trip. From Cebu take the ferry to Tagbularin and a taxi to Panglo Island where it is peacefull and safe. Many small hotels and beach clubs are available. I preferr Bohol Divers at white beach. Snorkel or rent a motor bike for travel around Panglo island, DO NOT take it to the city unless you have a death wish. Need introduction to nice village girls reach me at Don_viel@hotmail.com My Filipino wife has been stateside for fifteen years.
Posted by: donviel at October 28, 2007 3:01 PMI just returned from a week in the Manila area. I am totally fascinated with the Philippines and its wonderful people. I found a lot to see and do south of the city near Lake Taal and Pagjansan River. I also took an interesting trip to Corregidor. I hope to return in February and go to Baguio!
I found the Philippines to be relatively inexpensive. Most people speak English, and are very friendly. They will go out of their way to help you. The native foods were excellent and I had no trouble with the water.
I have also heard good things about Bohol, and am interested in that island too.
I plan to visit the Philz for the 1st time after too many years of procrastination. I fell in love with the people from the Philz as a child, here in Stockton we have a Philippin Community, and had Friends from there in my Navy days and now have a Boss from there nudging me to get going on traveling there.
This is a good write up and thank you for sharing.
As a well traveled guy, I find the Philippines quite contrasting in some ways, the people are nice, they speak english and very accomodating but their tourism is in a bad state compared to the rest of other asian nations, the government need to improve its infastructures in order to attract international tourists. Also it is expensive, getting to some tourist areas takes forever. They should send tourism officials on observation tours in neighboring countries to learn what needs to be done to improve its tourist trade. It is sad to see such a beautiful country that has so much to offer remain untapped or exploited by a few foreigners with money.
Posted by: Roland Navarro at October 29, 2007 2:29 PMFor the first-timers in the Philippines, I would recommend the beaches in Boracay and Palawan, the dive sites in Cebu and Bohol, and the mountain ranges in the Cordillera (northern Luzon). There are lots more the Philippines has to offer, with its more than 7000 islands, but not all local destinations may be appealing for a first-time tourist. They remain, and perhaps better so, for those truly interested in exploring the Philippine culture and countryside.
