New rules for visiting Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean go into effect soon

Starting Jan. 31st, you need at least "a government-issued photo ID (such as a driver's license) along with proof of citizenship (such as a birth certificate or naturalization certificate)" to leave the US and enter Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean (also to return to the US).

Passports are required for flying between these countries but not yet for driving.

I thought that you only needs a drivers lic and a passport. What is this about needing a birth certificate.

All I know is what I read but I think a passport is considered even "better" than a birth certificate so I would think a passport alone would be enough. When you fly a passport alone is fine. Then again, if you are driving you ought to have your license anyway...

My understanding is that if you have a passport, that's all you need. If you're traveling by air, you must have a passport. If you're traveling by land or sea you don't need a passport...yet.

But, if you don't have a passport, you will need more than just your driver's license. You will also need "proof of citizenship" -- the most common example of this being a birth certificate.

I travel weekly from Canada to the USA. You need a passport only to fly. To drive or walk across the border you need:

Option 1. Only your passport (the best way)
Option 2. Your Drivers License and Birth Certificate OR Naturalization Card.

You need both documents with Option #2.

It was my understanding that after a sertin date that it would be required to have a Passport while driving back & forth between the U.S. & Canada
