Bereavement or compassion fares
This article talks about the writer's search for a bereavement fare. Some US airlines have stopped offering bereavement fares but that may not be a huge loss since in this writer's experience, an online search beat the least expensive bereavement fare.

I tried to get a bereavement fare with Lufthansa Airlines for my father who was attending his mother's funeral. The representatives were so rude. Their main goal was attaining the highest fare possible.

I was met with rudeness and derision from the associate that was supposed to be helping me. I finally went to the suppervisor and got a lot of the same attitude from her. When I finally got someone who whould help me with it I was talking with an executive from the airline home office.
When I complained about the rude reception I got from the others I was told they were only doing thier job. I informed the executive that it was the last time I would ever fly on United Airline.
I did receive an appoligy from the customer support office but I have yet to fly on UA and will not fly with them again.
I later found that I could have flown for about 20% less by getting a regular fair ticket and would have been able to change the departure time with no problem. It happens with nearly all major Airlines.
