Driving with dogs and asking about swine flu again.

I have two questions:

First, I drove about 4 hours from Seoul to Jinju with my 2 dogs, a Yorkshire Terrier and a Maltese. I know small dogs are yappy, but mine are ridiculously bad in the car. Anyone have any tricks for either training dogs to travel in the car or at least keep them quiet (without drugging them or constantly feeding them treats)?

Second, I'd like to point out the question I asked a few days ago about swine flu causing changes to your travel plans. With the the increasing alarm bells, I'm a bit concerned about what might happen to my summer vacation and everyone else's.

I had a very unorthodox way of training my dog to behave in the car. I am a single woman and could never manage to correct my 80 lb dog while he was pacing incessantly in the back seat. Finally, I started to "brake check" him when he wouldn't sit still. I would say "Down!" very clearly and then hit the brakes. I'm not talking about slam him into the windshield, but make him wobbly enough where he didn't want to be standing up any longer. Now, when he gets insane, I just say "Down!" and he lies down instantly. Not sure if that would work the same on a small dog, but it worked for us. His pacing around was a huge safety hazard and now he just hangs out, safely in the back seat.

Sounds like a great idea Erica. My dog is fine if we're on the highway but as soon as we get into town and start stopping and turning and speeding up and slowing down... he hates starts to feel insecure. I put a little donut bed between the passenger seat and the back seat (on the floor) and make sure the bed is squeezed between the two so it can't move around. He knows that if he stays in the bed he won't be rolling around the car. The problem i haven't been able to solve so far is how to stop him from barking at cyclists!!
