Bose Quiet Comfort 3 Headphones vs. other high end headphones
I've heard that there are better headphones out there for sound quality but that Bose is #1 for comfort on long plane trips.
I know one person with the Bose 2 model who is very happy with them. They block out low humming noise like airplane engine noise. This way he doesn't have to crank up the volume of an in-flight movie or whatever. They don't block out all noises so you will still hear conversations, yelling kids and crying babies
The Bose 2 sit on top of the ear so after three or four hours his right ear starts to hurt. So he thinks the Bose 1 which are over the ear might be better in this regard. The Bose 3 are supposed to be like the Bose 2 only more compact.
Another friend basically said, before you spend a lot more for less, check out the line of Sennheiser headphones. They provide better sound for less money. But I don't know how comfortable they are for long flights either.
And Sharon mentioned Quiet Point headphones on this old post. I had never heard of them before and haven't heard of them since so I don't know what people are saying about them.

I use a pair of Sennheiser PXC300 noise reduction headphones that are quite small and perfect for a traveller. They do a nice job for their size. Here's the Amazon link. http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-Foldable-Active-Canceling-Headphones/dp/B00079PNU6

As noted above, these rest around your ear as opposed to the Bose Quiet Comfort 3s, which rest on your ears in such a way as to push down your ear lobes and become uncomfortable quickly.
I tried several noise cancelling headphones over the year - I wear them out on my frequent travelling, and lack of care...
Tried the noise cancelling Sennheiser PX250 which is like the Bose 2 but foldable, the AA battery is on the chord (making it hanging sometimes). It´s also on top of the ears which in fact is insoppotable for very long flights indeed. It does cancel noise, but not THAT much.
Almost equal to cancel noise - not so much for the engine noise, but better at the cabin noise- is the regular big Bose covering the ears. Much more comfy... but it gets hot in there after a while and you start to sweat a bit. Still much more comfy that the on top style.
Latest try is the CHEAP in-ear headphones. It´s about 20 to 100€ (not much difference really in quality unless sitting in a dead quiet room). It blocks even more noise than the Bose 2 I tried from a friend. The BUT is that it also blocks your ear from fresh air and you need to find a model that really suits your ear conduct, avoid too big and inflammed ear, too little and not really blocking the noise. BIG advantage is that it´s cheap and no battery issue. Plus when you loose them, you just buy new ones without thinking at that price. And it take NO SPACE in any carry-on.
What I do now is to travel with both the over the ear big Bose and the tiny in-ear and change every other hour. Depends on temperature too if you want to wear them outside (winter/summer).
