Slovak Tourist Authority unhappy about Hostel and now Hostel 2

Apparently Eli Roth has created a very disturbing horror movie. Horror movie buffs love Hostel, but the Slovak Tourist Authority hates it. The movie is about tourists being tortured in Bratislava:

Eli Roth, the writer and director of last year’s in-your-face horror hit Hostel, got himself a pile of hate mail from Slovakia after shooting the film in these parts. This time around, someone just may try to run him over.

I probably won’t watch this movie but they say it is far more violent than “soft” American horror movies.

I understand concerns about these movies from a travel industry standpoint, but I really feel that people adventurous enough to go off the standard London/Paris path in Europe and actually plan travel through Slovakia are not the same people who come out of the movie theater taking a fictional movie so seriously that it would impact travel plans. A seasoned traveller will not be effected by this movie (probably not even go to see it) and a frightened movie goer will probably never leave their home state. Also, to clarify, the point of the movie Hostel is not to scare people from traveling to distant places. It serves to show that when young college aged boys forget to use basic logic and only follow the feeling in their groin, it can lead them into trouble. Lastly, the movie does not take place in Bratislava. The film was shot there, but they are supposed to be out in the middle of absolutely nowhere.

I heard about this movie. I heard its based on true stuff out there. I can’t doubt it abit. Soft horror nope don’t think so. scary to travel i don’t know why but that is crazy i think. just go.

the movie is 100% NOT based on anything true. Is Star Wars real? Or Message in a Bottle? No! And with this movie it’s actually exactly the same- pure imagination. Who claims this is based on reality?! Where do you think Slovakia is?!

It’s a great country with superb food and extremely friendly people. I’m going there in May and I am very much looking forward to it.

Johanna obviously works for the tourism board of Slovakia. Just look at the U.S. State Department website for any east European country…
