Tokyo people watching part 1: harujuku girls

I like costumes and one of the main reasons I wanted to visit Tokyo was to see some of the wild fashion. That’s why Harujuku was one of my first stops in Tokyo and one of my last. Even in Harujuku, the majority of people are pretty normal looking but some people really stand out. It’s a nice change from Seoul where you just don’t see really wild fashion that often. I didn’t get many pictures of anime costumes – I didn’t feel like chasing after people and getting them to pose and it’s just too crowded to get a clear shot usually – but here are a couple of pics:

    Interesting pics! I wonder if the stores sell the costumes, or do they just use their imagination and what they see on TV to put them together. Do they get any money for posing, or just lots of attention?

    Stores do sell this stuff but I’m sure the outfits still take some imagination. I was pretty surprised at how expensive these stores were too – I mean dressing like this could be a very expensive hobby. And to answer your question, I don’t think anyone is paying them to make their fashion statements.

    James, you should submit the center pic (The girl dressed in black, against the gray wall) to a photo contest. I bet it would win! Your eye on that one, was superb.

    When my daughter Julie saw these pictures, the bottom one in particular, she immediately thought of and reminded me of the Hello Kitty fad, created in Tokyo by the Japanese designer Shimizu in the early 1970’s and sold worldwide.
