Top destinations for solo travel?

This article says it’s

1. New York City, USA

2. Santiago, Chile

3. San Francisco, USA

4. Rome, Italy

5. New Zealand (adventure travel trips originating from Queenstown)

6. Paris, France

7. Tulum, Mexico

8. Reykjavik, Iceland

9. Bhutan (the whole country I guess)

10. Amsterdam, The Netherlands

I’ve only been to 1, 4, 6, and 10, but none of those struck me as the kind of place that would be especially good to visit alone. Well, maybe New York because of my friends and family there but I’m not sure what it is about New York City that makes it good for solo travel.

I would definitely say NYC for solo travel. Since I have visited there many times and even lived in the City for a while, I know it quite well, which does make a difference. However, even if it’s your first time, I would recommend it. It’s easy to see a lot of major attractions in a relatively small area, from mid-town to Central Park, where hotels are plentiful. People do a lot of walking here, but finding transportation is usually not a problem except in the theatre district after dark. I never feel uncomfortable by myself in a restaurant, hotel bar, or cocktail lounge. I think this is partly because there are a lot of single people working in the City and contrary to popular opinion, people are often friendly and helpful. I’m never uncomfortable being alone while shopping, sightseeing, going to plays, or just strolling around the city. You really don’t have to go far to see a lot of NYC; the streets and avenues are well laid out. NYC is actually very safe, one of the safest large cities in the U.S. Probably not advisable to venture out alone after dark or further than the area you become familiar with, however. During the holidays, pickpockets are out, so don’t carry a lot of cash in your purse or wallet. Merge with the crowds, but don’t draw attention to yourself and there shouldn’t be a problem.
