What books / movies have inspired you to travel?

Now that I think about it most of the movies that inspired me to travel have made we want to go places I haven’t been yet.

Before Sunrise really showed some wonderful shots of Vienna. I haven’t been there yet, but it has been very high on my list ever since I saw that movie. The sequel, however, Before Sunset wasn’t nearly as inspiring for me even though it was set in Paris.

When I was in college I read Jack Kerouac’s On the Road which inspired me to travel without a plan (funny considering the name of my blog here but hey now I’m old and like to plan stuff) and I did actually go on a 3-week roadtrip with a friend where our goal was to get to the youth hostel in Orlando. We didn’t know it would take 3 weeks to get there but we definitely had fun on the way.

More recently, my wife and I saw Elizabethtown and now we really want to take a road trip – we did drive from New York to Algonquin Park to Ottawa and back but somehow that didn’t seem like a real road trip – maybe because it was too scripted.

So what movies have inspired you?

I like the movie “A Room With a View” with Helena Bonham-Carter, Maggie Smith and Denholm Elliott. The Italian countryside and Florence look so beautiful in that movie.

The scenery in the movie “Under the Tuscan Sun” gave me the itch to see the real thing. Haven’t yet – maybe in the fall or next year.

Peter Mayle’s books about Provence and the south of France have us going back to stroll through the lavender fields. AND any Rick Steves travel book will inspire people to see the world through the back doors.

I’m another one who loved the scenery in “Under the Tuscan Sun” and we planned a trip to Europe this fall, however with the dollar losing value we decided Europe was not in the cards this year. “The Shipping News” was another book/movie that resonated with me and so a road trip to the Canadian Maritimes is in the plans for September. We’ll be flying from Colorado to Boston and then visiting Maine, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and New Brunswick for 2 weeks. We can’t wait!

I guess Forest Gump by listening to all the people talk about it. We ran 1400 mile from Lake Superior in Marquette, MI to The Gulf of Mexico in Biloxi, Mississippi. It was done to inspire people to not set around and say “I wish I would have” or “I should have done….” We also ran to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s. Check it out at www TogetherWeRun com

I still love to see Monument Valley in Thelma and Louise – and I’m still trying to get there!

AZ-NM Navajo Reservation: Tony Hillerman’s fictional books about the Navajo Tribal Police (especially The Fallen Man) have inspired me to visit the Navajo Reservation a number of times.

In 2004 I travelled to New Zealand on a “Lord of the Rings” Tour. It inspired me to make a website on “real-file” filming locations. This hobby took me on a quest around the world: China (“Curse of the Golden Flower” and “Seven Years in Tibet”), London UK (“Harry Potter” – “V for Vendetta” – “National Treasure 2”), Paris France (“Bourne Identity” – “DaVinci Code”) – Sydney Australia (“Mission:Impossible-2” – “The Matrix”), Mexico and Guatemala (“Frida” – “Star Wars”).

The favorite movie, Titanic, Leo starring had inspired me to have a dream traveling by cruiseship. Of course altough there was such a horrible historical accident, i cannot forget the scene where exists luxurious other facilities and fanscinate parties. So if i get bunch of money, i will go cruise travel by all means.
